Therapy
There's nothing like chicks for some mid-winter therapy! The peeping, the pecking, the scurrying, the napping. The cuteness! These are Gold Star pullets from Hoovers Hatchery. 52 of them, that should be laying by June - in time for farmers market.
Our garage has a heated floor, but when I turned up the thermostat early this morning nothing happened. The temperature outside was 25 below, the room temperature was about 42 above. Uh oh. I like the room temperature to be about 60.
I picked up a space heater, and of course there's a couple of heat lamps going. They seem quite comfortable. I got the temp up to almost 60, but this evening it's started to drop. Just crossing my fingers that it doesn't drop too much tonight. Matt just dropped Madeline off at a friend's and the car says its 30 below.

How cute! What do you have beneath them, is that cat litter or sand? I hope they're okay...they're pretty cute!

Oh, fluffy chicks! You are making me want some again. :)
I've got to get some chicks soon. They are too sweet!
Patrice - I use wood shavings in the brooder, but I cover that with newspaper the first day. That's what you see in these pictures.
Kris - I'm happy to report they got along just fine!

Awwwww it's so hard to believe that our girls where that little less than a year ago!

oohhh! baby chicks! Is this the first time you are doing eggs? or did I miss that you guys offered them as well somewhere?
mommymommyland - we've been doing layers for 4 or 5 years now. But those hens are getting old, not laying, and I've lost a lot during the cold weather the last several weeks. So we're starting again!
