Us versus Possum, Day 6
We got a couple of live traps from a friend on Sunday. Set the trap last night, baited with a couple of eggs. Today, no eggs and no possum. Guess the trap needs an adjustment.

Aren't possums kind of small animals. Can't you just kick its butt or something, tee,hee..
Ahh, but he can still get the eggs for free from the chickens! Why go into the trap?
Possums LOVE catfood, especially canned catfood. Try that.
I always thought about just doing a roadrunner cartoon type thing and paint a roadway on the ground. Wait in your car, you know he'll try to cross it (maybe its just an Alabama thing....).
I have a request. I realize that when people get "Live Traps" they generally intend to live release the culprit. Please don't. Please kill the critter. If you release it somewhere else, even out in the 'middle of nowhere' you are putting your problem in someone else's backyard. Furthermore you may be transmitting disease from one place to another. I live in the middle of a long stretch of country road. People think it is a wooded noman's land and they're always dumping animals, carcasses, trash, etc along the road. I do not appreciate it - it is my backyard. Please kill the problem animal rather than doing a catch and release. Don't spread your problem further. I hope I have not offended you, that is not my intent, I just want to stop this sort of spreading of disease and problems.
Please rethink your position on opossums. They are a gentle creature. Check the web site for the National Opossum Society. They do not carry diseases and they are not aggressive.
All vertebrates can carry disease; in fact we all DO carry a load of viruses and bacteria that we've learned to live with. If that weren't true, we wouldn't need to cook meat.
If the immediate environment can't support the possum's lifestyle, you should kill him and EAT him. That's how an ecosystem is supposed to work! Allowing him to breed and overrun the carrying capacity of the local environment is cruel to possums and everything else that has to share their ecological niche.
